Brilliant Emperor Records beckons you into the shadowed depths with the re-release of Mortiis’s legendary first pre-release promo tape for *Født til å Herske*. Once a rare, clandestine artifact circulated only among select initiates, this recording now rises from the abyss to offer a rare glimpse into the primal forge of the Norwegian dark dungeon pioneer’s earliest visions. A pivotal relic in the evolution of dungeon synth and ambient darkness, it captures the raw essence of a sound that would echo through the ages.
This reissue resurrects the original cassette in its raw, unfiltered form, capturing the haunting atmospheres and spectral textures that laid the foundation of Mortiis’s dark universe. As the first-ever LP and cassette reissue, it offers a portal to immerse oneself in the visceral experience of those early, clandestine days. Meticulously recreating elements of the original promo tape—whilst summoning lost visions from that era—an authentic relic is forged to bridge past and present. The release stands as a sacred artifact for collectors, adepts, and seekers eager to explore the shadowy roots of Mortiis’s visionary craft.
In his own words, Mortiis weaves a tale from the darkened studio chambers:
*"A story I often tell about the recording of Født Til Å Herske revolves around how everything was captured live, in one continuous breath, straight onto tape. When I arrived at the studio, the engineer was this surfer-looking guy, a few years older than me, working there as a way to escape military service. He was pretty cool, but I had forgotten to tell him that, for these long, 25-minute compositions, I would be recording in sections—perhaps two or three minutes each, fading in and out of each other. Once I began, of course, I made a multitude of mistakes—thirty seconds, a minute, two minutes in—and had to halt, restart, and redo. The poor guy was silently panicking! How could this young kid (I was only 18) expect to perform flawless takes of twenty-five minutes when he couldn’t even play two without error? He thought he’d be trapped in that studio with me for eternity. But, in the end, we sorted it all out, and the album was finished in four to five days."*
It’s also worth noting that the original promo tape only featured "Part II" of the full *Født til å Herske* album, and did not include "Part I." The vocals on this early recording are unrefined and raw, contrasting with the re-recorded vocals that later appeared on the official album version—polished and integrated into the final master.
These candid recounts and raw recordings offer a glimpse into the organic chaos and energy that birthed one of Mortiis’s most influential works. Brilliant Emperor Records’s reawakening of this relic celebrates the primal origins of Mortiis’s dark journey—an opportunity for both the initiated and the uninitiated to experience the haunting depths of his formative darkness. The release will be available in limited edition cassette and LP vinyl formats, newly remastered to restore their spectral beauty and invite listeners into the realm of one who was born to rule. The official dawn of this re-release will occur on the 16th May, 2025.
